August has been a busy month of community work, engagement, and representation across Haydon Wick and Priory Vale.
Nature & Environment
Vinay seconded a proposal to begin a new nature trail at Mouldon Hill, using QR codes along routes to share information about biodiversity and local history. This project aims to make the park more interactive and engaging for residents.
He also raised environmental concerns, including the impact of this summer’s weather on tree health and the ongoing problems with waste and litter on Akers Way.
Young People & Families
Vinay attended the Draycott Sports summer camp alongside Leanne Stevenson, including sessions supported by the Holiday Activities Fund. This gave them the chance to see how the top-up funding helps children access activities. They also joined the young carers camp, taking the opportunity to listen to their views and see the positive impact of giving them time alongside peers.
Play Areas & Green Space
Alongside Leanne Stevenson, he supported the consultation and rejuvenation of Thyme Close Play Park, where residents painted equipment and shared ideas for future enhancements.
During National Allotments Week, Vinay supported Leanne Stevenson’s petition to protect future allotment provision and safeguard green space for the community.
Community Events
At the Summer Extravaganza, Vinay stepped into the stocks to raise money for charity, helping to make the day both fun and memorable for residents.
He also attended the Haven Coffee Morning and the Memory Café, where he engaged with some of the parish’s most vulnerable residents.
Residents’ Concerns
Vinay spent time out across Priory Vale, listening to residents’ concerns on hedges, bins, school places, buses, roads, footpaths, and parking. He raised specific issues regarding footpaths around Lavinia, Havisham Drive, Torun Way, and Haydon End Lane.
Local Economy & Business Engagement
Vinay put forward an outline proposal for a monthly Orbital Market, designed to promote small local businesses and strengthen the local economy. The proposal received support from colleagues, including Leanne Stevenson.
He also visited the Amazon warehouse and fulfilment centre to learn how the company supports the local community, and spoke with MuddySquad, a local business, about their growth and challenges.
Transport & Highways
Vinay pressed for long-overdue repairs at the Orbital, which Swindon Borough Council has now accepted responsibility for and scheduled in December. While this is a positive step, he has highlighted concerns about disruption during the Christmas trading period and continues to push for clarity on the scope of the work.
He also visited the new bus boulevard, recognising the improvements it offers compared to the old bus station and welcoming it as a step in the right direction for regeneration.
Looking Ahead
In the weeks ahead, Vinay will continue engaging with residents, begin work on the Parish Council’s strategy and budget, and focus on ensuring the council plans responsibly. He will also look ahead to seasonal challenges, addressing potential concerns early as the weather changes.
