Swindon Big Knit Brightens Haydon Wick for Remembrance
Swindon Big Knit post box topper, lovingly created in honour of Remembrance.
Last night I was joined by Cllr Vinay Manro and Cllr Adam John across the road from Haydon Wick Parish Office on Thames Avenue for the reveal of this year’s stunning Swindon Big Knit post box topper, lovingly created in honour of Remembrance.
The display features a hand-knitted figure of a serving soldier standing proudly above a glowing canopy of hundreds of red poppies, cascading down to form a moving sea of remembrance. Each poppy, carefully handmade by volunteers, carries its own quiet story, a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and unity.

As the evening light faded, the scene glowed softly beneath the streetlights while members of the Swindon Big Knit Community Group worked together to drape every poppy into place. Their dedication and creativity have once again filled Haydon Wick with warmth and colour, reminding us that remembrance is as much about compassion in the present as it is about honouring the past.
Last month, the group also donated 200 hand-crafted poppies to support the wider parish displays now appearing on lampposts across Haydon Wick, a united and visible tribute to those who gave their today for our tomorrow.
If you’d like to show your support, hand-knitted poppies are available from the Parish Office (Thames Avenue), Monday to Friday, 8.30 am – 4 pm. All donations go directly to the Royal British Legion, supporting our armed forces community.
As we pause to reflect, may we continue to honour the fallen, support the living, and keep their legacy alive in our hearts and our parish.
Lest we forget🕊️
