I have received confirmation that the annual hay cut at Seven Fields Nature Reserve will take place within the next two weeks.
✔ The contractor is scheduled to begin next weekend, subject to dry weather.
✔ In preparation, the tree team will clear entrances and pathways to ensure machinery can access the site safely.
It is regrettable that this work is taking place later than planned. Such delays bring clear risks, including:
Overgrown grass increasing the risk of fire in dry conditions
Reduced biodiversity benefits, as wildflowers may not seed evenly
Greater difficulty for contractors in carrying out an effective cut
Restricted pathways and reduced visibility for visitors
Best practice recommends hay cutting between late July and August, once wildflowers have set seed but before grass growth becomes excessive. Undertaking the cut in September falls outside this optimum window and lessens both the environmental and safety benefits.
I will also be raising questions with Swindon Borough Council regarding the frequency and standard of tree surveys, following the recent tree fall near Ray Close at the edge of the field. Residents rightly expect assurance that trees are being inspected and maintained to the necessary standard to keep this well-used site safe.
Timely and consistent action is essential to protect biodiversity, reduce risks, and maintain Seven Fields as a safe and accessible space for all.
