Partial Win for Swindon’s Allotment Protection Campaign 👏🏻
Open space audit now shows allotments within higher strategic plan
Partial Win for Swindon’s Allotment Protection Campaign 👏🏻
We’ve secured an important step forward. The new Open Space Audit now places allotments within a higher strategic open space category. They are recognised as part of Swindon’s core green network and counted in the same way as parks, amenity land and community green spaces.
This strengthens their weight in planning decisions and it shows that resident pressure is working.
Key Wins So Far
Allotments have been upgraded into a strategic open space category.
They now count towards ward open-space standards, giving them greater planning significance.
Their role in health, wellbeing, community activity, biodiversity and food growing is formally acknowledged.
The Council has responded to resident pressure before the full Local Plan is published.
These are real gains and they give us stronger footing.
👉 What Happens Next
We need to keep pushing until:
Every allotment site has clear long-term protection, every ward has the growing space it needs.
The progress so far belongs to all of us but the work isn’t finished.
👉 We Still Need More Signatures:
We are close to the threshold for Swindon Borough Council to formally debate this petition.
