This year’s weather has been tough on trees. Long dry spells, sudden heat, and uneven rainfall have left many under stress. Some are overburdened with heavy fruit and foliage while others are showing signs of decline.
As the community’s eyes and ears we can play a vital role in keeping people safe and protecting the health of our trees. Local authorities and landowners each have responsibilities for tree care and safety, but it often starts with us noticing when something isn’t right.
We should report if we notice:
- A tree looking dry, wilting or with discoloured leaves
- Branches leaning, broken or at risk of falling
- Trees carrying unusually heavy crops of fruit or foliage
- Signs of disease, decay or damage around the trunk or base
Who looks after what?
Public trees: the Parish can cut up to 3.6m; anything beyond that is generally Swindon Borough Council’s responsibility.
