π² Do you know the laws around electric bikes? π²
The police need to step up and remove them from the roads
If you are thinking about buying an electric bike, or have already purchased one, please ensure you are familiar with the law and regulations around riding them.
Electric Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPC), more commonly known as electric bikes, are legal to ride if you are over the age of 14 and do not require a licence or need to be registered, taxed or insured.
But they must meet certain criteria.
These are:
β They must have pedals to propel it, and the pedals must be in motion for electric assistance to be provided;
β They must have a maximum output of 250 watts;
β They must not be able to provide electric assistance over 15.5mph;
β They must also show either the batteryβs voltage or the maximum speed of the bike.
Electric bikes that do not meet the EAPC rules are classed as a motorcycle or moped and need to be registered, insured and taxed.
Youβll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.
Any person riding such a vehicle which does not meet the criteria who is disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence will commit the offence of driving while disqualified.
Under #OpJetsom, we are midway through an educational phase on the laws concerning e-bikes and e-scooters. From August 1, anyone seen riding illegally will have it seized. As it is uninsurable, you won't get it back.
