After serving 23 years in the British Army, attending Armed Forces Day at Lydiard Park with my family was a chance to pause and reflect, not just on my own service but on the long-standing traditions and sacrifices made by others across generations.
This year’s event marked 80 years since the end of the Second World War. It brought together veterans, serving personnel, cadets, families, fellow councillors and members of the public for a day of recognition and remembrance. There was a wide range of activities on the day, from military vehicles and cadet displays to live music, community stalls and a funfair. A commemorative tree planting offered a quiet and thoughtful moment within the wider celebration.
For me, Armed Forces Day is about community and shared experience. It is a reminder of the value of service and of the people, past and present, who have worn the uniform with pride. It is also a chance to reconnect, acknowledge the support of families and simply be part of a day that recognises what service means.
Thank you to everyone who helped bring the day together, to Swindon Bus Company for offering free travel for veterans and serving personnel, and to my fellow councillors for their continued support for our Armed Forces community.
Proud to have served and proud to stand alongside those who serve, have served and support our Armed Forces.
