A Spooktacular Plastic-Free Halloween 👻🎃
Halloween is one of the most creative nights of the year but it’s also one of the most wasteful. From plastic-wrapped sweets to throwaway costumes, tonnes of plastic end up in bins after just one night.
This year, let’s make our Halloween frightfully fun and planet-friendly.
🧛♀️ Bring Costumes Back from the Dead
Most shop-bought Halloween costumes are made from plastic, and millions are binned every year. Instead, raid your wardrobe or charity shops, upcycle old clothes, or swap costumes with friends and family. A few stitches and a bit of imagination can transform almost anything into something spooky!
💀 Paint It, Don’t Waste It
Skip plastic masks and opt for natural, non-toxic face paints instead. They’re washable, reusable and kinder to your skin and the planet.
🎃 Love Your Pumpkin – Don’t Bin It!
Around 8 million pumpkins are thrown away in the UK each year. Roast the seeds, make soup or pie, or compost the leftovers – nothing spooky about zero waste!
🕸 Decorate Naturally
Forget plastic cobwebs and shop-bought decorations. Get creative with:
Paper bats and ghosts
Leaf garlands and twig wreaths
Jam-jar or milk-jug lanterns
Autumnal displays made from conkers, pinecones and fallen leaves
They’re recyclable, biodegradable and much more charming than plastic!
🍬 Trick-or-Treat Sustainably
Reuse an old tin, or last years Halloween bucket, tote bag or pillowcase for collecting sweets – decorate it with paint or fabric scraps for a personal touch.
If you’re handing out treats, go for paper-wrapped sweets or home-baked goodies instead of single-use plastics.
🐿 Give Wildlife a Treat Too
Leave a corner of your garden a little wild this autumn – pile up fallen leaves for hedgehogs, or hang seed balls for birds. Every little bit helps nature thrive.
💡 Small Changes, Big Impact
Every simple switch – from costumes to candles helps reduce waste and protect our environment. Imagine if every household made just one eco-friendly change this Halloween!
